HDPE or PP? Bottle, jerry can, or spray-trigger pack? A practical guide to selecting durable, compliant plastic packaging from a South African manufacturer.

Selecting the right packaging is one of the most important decisions you will make for your product. The bottle, cap, and closure protect your contents, communicate your brand, and determine how your product performs on the shelf and in the hand of your customer. At Schaldor Plastics, we have manufactured HDPE and PP packaging for the agricultural, automotive, household, chemical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries since 2003 — and this guide distils what we have learned into a few practical questions.

Start with the contents

The single biggest factor in choosing a bottle is what goes inside it. Ask yourself:

  • Is the product water-thin or viscous? Thin liquids pour easily; thick products may need a wide neck or a dispensing closure.
  • Is it chemically aggressive? Solvents, acids, and agricultural chemicals need a resin and wall thickness that resist permeation and stress cracking.
  • Does it need protection from light or oxygen? Pigmented or barrier materials help preserve sensitive formulations.

HDPE vs PP: a quick comparison

Two materials cover the majority of everyday packaging needs:

  • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) — tough, impact-resistant, and excellent for chemical and household products. It is the workhorse of blow-moulded bottles and jerry cans.
  • PP (Polypropylene) — stiffer, with a higher heat tolerance and a glossier finish. It is well suited to caps, closures, and products that need to withstand warmer fill or storage temperatures.

The right choice depends on your contents, your fill process, and how the pack will be transported and stored.

Match the closure to the use case

A bottle is only as good as its closure. Consider how your customer will actually use the product:

  • Screw caps for secure, leak-resistant storage.
  • Spray triggers for cleaning, garden, and household products that need controlled application.
  • Flip-tops and dispensing caps for everyday convenience.

Getting the neck finish and closure combination right prevents leaks, improves shelf life, and creates a better experience for the end user.

Think about branding early

Your packaging is a marketing surface. Decoration options such as in-mould labelling (IML) and silk screening let you build your brand directly into the pack with durable, high-quality graphics that survive handling and moisture. Deciding on decoration early influences bottle shape, panel size, and label placement.
